DESCRIPTION

We are a Labor and Employment Law firm based in Annapolis, MD and owned by a highly respected employment law attorney Joyce E. Smithey. We assist employees and employers throughout Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia and all federal employees with a diverse range of legal issues; including but not limited to discrimination of all forms in the workplace, hostile work environments, sexual harassment and abuse, retaliation, wage issues, whistleblowing, etc. We pride ourselves on being advocates for the LGBTQIA+ community and fighting for the civil rights of those who have been wronged.

Answer: More than 10%

Answer: It is recommended, but not required.

Answer: It is a topic commonly discussed in our firm's DEIA Committee.

Answer: We have a general anti-discrimination clause that covers LGBTQ and other marginalized groups.

Answer: We have year-round shows of support that are specifically affirming or positive for the LGBTQ+ community.

Question: How do you promote diverse employment among qualified job applicants?

Answer: SLG promotes diverse employment among qualified applicants through intentional, fair, and inclusive hiring practices. We ensure that all job postings are widely distributed across diverse professional networks, including organizations and platforms that serve underrepresented communities. Our hiring process is structured to focus on qualifications, skills, and experience, using standardized evaluation criteria to reduce bias. When possible, we incorporate diverse perspectives into the interview process and provide training to hiring personnel on equitable hiring practices. Additionally, SLG is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace culture that supports retention and professional growth for all employees. We regularly review our recruitment strategies and workplace policies to ensure they align with our commitment to equal opportunity and diversity.


Question: How do you try to create a queer-inclusive business space?

Answer: Our firm welcomes queer-inclusive business spaces for all employees and proudly displays the Progress Pride Flag in our office and on our firms' website to display solidarity in our support and allyship.


Question: What are examples of your queer-inclusive policies? (Do you have all-gender restrooms? Do you have a trans-inclusive policy for your facilities? Do you allow customers and/or employees to change their information easily and confidentially?)

Answer: An example of our queer-inclusive policies is through our standard intake form. All potential clients are asked what their preferred pronouns are when they conduct an intake form for the attorney's review. We assure all potential clients that we are an all inclusive firm to ensure all potential clients/current clients feel safe sharing this information with us, All of our employees also use pronouns in our email signatures to illuminate our inclusivity and diversity within the firm. Employees and clients are always welcome to change their information at any time. Our DEIA Committee leads the firms annual LGBTQIA+ ProBono Hotline and Annapolis Pride Sponsorship.
