DESCRIPTION

The Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) empowers Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families through education, advocacy, and community involvement. NVRC provides resources, training, and support that promote accessibility, independence, and inclusion, and strives to create welcoming, affirming spaces for people of all identities.

Answer: More than 10%


Question: What are your policies on LGBTQ+ trainings?

Answer: It is recommended, but not required.


Question: How often do you require or recommend LGBTQ+ inclusive training?

Answer: Inclusive practices are addressed through broader accessibility, disability, and equity training, with opportunities for additional learning as needed.


Question: Which best describes your current policies and procedures for your LGBTQ+ staff?

Answer: NVRC’s anti-discrimination policies explicitly include sexual orientation and are grounded in equity and fairness for all employees.


Question: Which best describes your current policies and procedures for your LGBTQ+ clients?

Answer: We have a general anti-discrimination clause that cover LGBTQ and other marginalized groups.


Question: How do you create a positive space for the LGBTQ+ community?

Answer: We have year-round shows of support that are specifically affirming or positive for the LGBTQ+ community.

Question: What type of organization do you represent? Briefly describe your mission.

Answer: The Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) empowers Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families through education, advocacy, and community involvement. We provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing Northern Virginians—along with their families, friends, and the businesses and agencies that serve them—with the tools and resources needed for success and independence in their communities.


Question: Do you have any LGBTQ+ leadership and, if so, how do they represent queer issues to your organization?

Answer: Yes. NVRC has openly LGBTQ+ leadership among both staff and board members, along with strong ally representation. LGBTQ+ leaders help shape an inclusive organizational culture, inform policies and practices, and ensure that LGBTQ+ perspectives are respected and considered across programs, services, and community engagement.


Question: What kind of queer-inclusive training materials do you supply to individuals in or outside of your organization?

Answer: While NVRC does not currently offer LGBTQ+-specific standalone training, inclusive practices related to sexual orientation and gender identity are incorporated into our broader accessibility, disability, and equity-focused education and training. We are open to collaboration and partnerships to expand queer-inclusive and intersectional training opportunities.


Question: How do you make your organization a safe and affirming place for LGBTQ+ people to be?

Answer: NVRC fosters a welcoming and affirming environment through inclusive leadership, respectful use of names and pronouns, anti-discrimination policies that explicitly include sexual orientation, and a culture of allyship across staff and board members. Our services and programs are open to all, and we strive to create year-round affirming spaces for people of all identities.


Question: In your fundraising activities, do you solicit funds from non-affirming organizations? If so, which organizations?

Answer: No. NVRC does not knowingly solicit or accept funding from organizations whose values or practices are contrary to our commitment to equity, inclusion, accessibility, and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized communities.
