Industry Survey
Question: Which queer organizations have you worked with, donated to, or supported- now or in the past?
Answer: Megan donates yearly to the Human Rights Campaign with her family. She was a straight ally in a LGBTQ+ small business organization in Silicon Valley, where she lived there before moving back to NoVa. Before becoming a massage therapist, Megan was a pastry chef and owned a wedding cake design company here in Ashburn. She was known for creating beautiful cakes for LGBTQ+ couples and connecting them with other allied vendors.
Question: How do you promote diverse employment among qualified job applicants?
Answer: VALO is a small massage and energy work practice, and I am mainly a solo practitioner. I don't currently have traditional employees, but I do bring on independent contractors as the practice grows. When selecting contractors, I prioritize their skill, licensing, and alignment with a client-centered, inclusive approach to care. I don't screen for or ask about sexual orientation or gender identity during hiring, and I make clear that VALO serves and welcomes clients of all backgrounds and that discrimination is absolutely not tolerated at VALO. As VALO grows, I'm committed to keeping hiring practices open and non-discriminatory, and to making sure that expectation is explicit for anyone who joins the practice in any capacity.
Question: How do you try to create a queer-inclusive business space?
Answer: Our intake forms ask new clients to provide their preferred pronouns so they are addressed properly upon their first appointment. We also have a sticker on our door saying "all are welcome here" with rainbow hearts.
Question: What are examples of your queer-inclusive policies? (Do you have all-gender restrooms? Do you have a trans-inclusive policy for your facilities? Do you allow customers and/or employees to change their information easily and confidentially?)
Answer: Customers can always update and change their information easily and confidentially. A client's preferred pronouns are requested before a first appointment. Megan believes deeply in providing a space where everyone feels welcomed and safe. Safety is an important part of body and energy work. She engages in conversation before each session to discuss body autonomy to set mutual safe boundaries and to see how she can best support her client that day. She continues to serve beautiful humans of all genders, sexual orientations, races, and creeds. Megan believes all life is sacred and deserving of client-centered care.
